RAINFORD’S cricketers missed out on an opportunity to secure promotion last Saturday when losing to nearest rivals Formby. The result meant that Formby, in turn, go top of Med Imaging Liverpool Competition Division One. All is not lost, however, as Rainford sit in third place, one point behind Highfield, who are just seven points behind Formby. Remarkably, five sides have a chance of reaching the Premier Division on this Saturday’s last day. Wigan are only six points behind Rainford, who make the trip to Sefton Park. Even Colwyn Bay, if all the other results fall their way, are still in with an outside chance of moving up. On Saturday Formby posted 193, with four wickets for Daron Cruickshank and three each for Andy Davies and John Dotters. Rainford were then bowled out for 108. After an excellent season, Rainford’s 2nd XI find themselves in a similar position with five teams vying for the second promotion slot to the Second XI Premier Division. On Saturday they lost to Leigh, Jack Hemingway scoring 66 not out in their total of 164 all out and Ian Fenney then taking 2-7 as Leigh won by five wickets. Rainford play Lytham this Saturday at the Jubilee Recreation Ground where a win could give them every chance of promotion.
