Five-year-old Tariq was sat on a bed, near to the window watching the thunder and lightning, when one of the bricks shattered the glass.

Tariq was left with two injuries, needing four pieces of glass removed and requiring stitches.

The youth who threw the brick was dressed in black with his face covered, threw an object at the window and then made off from the scene.

Police say CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing and police are asking anyone with any information to come forward.

Detective Inspector Sue Hinds said: “This was an appalling incident, leaving a young child injured, and we are doing all we can to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“Such reckless acts of criminal damage will simply not be tolerated on Merseyside and we would ask anyone with any information to come forward.

“If you were in the Elephant Lane area yesterday and saw anything or anyone suspicious, or captured anything on mobile phone or dashcam then please let us know. Any information you hold could prove vital to our enquiries.”

Speaking to the Star, Tariq's mum Naomi said: "The first brick hit the camera on the front the second brick came through the window showering my boy in glass.

"If he hadn't reacted so quickly and ducked the glass would have been in his face.

"He came running out the bedroom screaming with blood running down his arm and his back.

"He went to run into the back bedroom for safety and then the youth bricked that window too."

Naomi added: "He has sustained two injuries and has four pieces of glass removed. The injury has had to have stitches due to it being so deep.

"He is now scared in his own home and won't go near windows or anywhere in the house without one of us being with him.

"My happy little boy is now scared, every noise like a car door being shut outside, he thinks it's the youth coming back again.

"Someone knows who this guy is.

"Within four minutes of its happening gangs of kids were arriving and filming the house and taking photos. The police have moved them on.

"We need a name so we can get justice for my little boy and make him feel safe again.

"It's going to be a long healing process for him. At five years old it's hard to process.

"The physical injuries may heal, the mental injuries may never fully heal."
