ST HELENS anniversary of 150 years ago
There must be lots of people with St Helens history that they know
My great, great Uncle, Newton Lacey, was head of Cowley School
Then known as Lacey School to celebrate his rule.
Then his brother, Henry, started the Mechanics Institute
To educate the working man which was quite astute.
Head of the Libraries Committee he opened the first library in town
In Lacey Street in Thatto Heath though now it is pulled down.
They were both Chartists and their politics were good
Fighting for working men so they’d been understood.
My great Grandfather, Benjamin Glover, opened the golf club in Grange Park
Where his descendants like my father loved to play from dawn to dark.
I am sure there must be people with ancestors just like mine
Who did things for St. Helens to be remembered for all time.
