THERE was much publicity via the Star, local radio and flashing road information signs (Fingerpost) telling drivers to avoid Boardmans Lane and Blackbrook Road due to the resurfacing works.

The advice was to use alternative routes to avoid the worst of this traffic and to help alleviate congestion on the route.

Following this advice, and knowing St Helens very well, I diverted my route, avoiding Blackbrook Road and Boardmans Lane and heading down one of only few alternative routes, down into Newton-le-Willows and back into Haydock via Vista Road.

Doing this, I was completely dumbfounded to find a long line of slow moving cars due to more roadworks, and a set of temporary traffic lights on Vista Road leading into Haydock.

So not only am I being informed to avoid the Boardmans Lane/Blackbrook Road and use an alternative route, the alternative route in place has a set of temporary traffic lights on it.

I think it was lacklustre planning from the Highways department that they informed people to use alternative routes, but did not make sure these alternative routes were accessible during the works.

Surely the Vista Road works could have been postponed a week or so to allow this to be used as an alternative route?
