READING John Hansen’s letter (Star, October 27) about how a school safety zone including a chicane had increased the potential for crashes in Crosspit Lane, Rainford, I have to say until people are made to cut their speed or face a tough penalty, it’s only going to get worse on the village’s roads.

In Mossborough Road, we have to endure horrendous levels of traffic for such a narrow route, with Pasture Lane still not fully open after the flood collapse of last winter. We are now the main road into the village.

We get cars racing to beat each other past parked cars. In a typical few minutes you can see heavy lorries, huge farm tractors tugging trailers, buses and drivers who would feel more at home at Brands Hatch than a village road.

One neighbour says he’s witnessed idiot drivers overtaking on the wrong side of the bollards opposite the village hall so they don’t have to wait for a few seconds. Madness!

The situation has also been made worse by the relatively new one-way system in Thickwood Moss. Many people living there themselves feel it was not the best decision and would probably have been better if the one-way order had been made in the other direction.

I would welcome a response from the police on how they propose to make the village roads safer.
