I AM writing in response to Mr Boughey’s letter suggesting a lack of knowledge about Norman Harvey VC having a street named after him already in Earlestown.
The truth is quite the opposite. Norman Harvey is one of the only VC winners to have surviving relatives that we know of and this was fully discussed with them.
While it is commonly accepted that Harvey Avenue was probably named after Pte Harvey VC, there is no official record. The houses were built and named around 1956-1957 and looking back through council minutes and local newspapers, there is absolutely no reference to the street being named after Pte Harvey officially.
It’s important that we honour all of our VC winners in a consistent way. The way proposed is a fitting way to mark the centenary.
