ST Helens Town still have four games left to maintain their NW Counties Premier Division status, following the postponement of Monday’s trip to Glossop.

In fact, both their rivals’ matches were called off on Saturday, so Town remain precariously placed on 22 points, a point ahead of Barnoldswick and five clear of Bacup, with two teams set to be relegated at the season’s end.

Town have to sit out Saturday’s curtailed league programme and are next in action away to landlords Ashton Athletic on Easter Monday (kick-off at 3pm).

They will be trying to take at least a point from their hosts, to give themselves a fighting chance, as AFC Blackpool, a point ahead of St Helens, have a derby clash of their own against Squires Gate, whilst Barnoldswick entertain Nelson and Bacup take on Colne.

Bacup are, as usual at this stage of the season, in the midst of a busy spell. Weather permitting, they were due to face Alsager on Wednesday, before a trip to 1874 Northwich on Saturday.

As we went to press, no new date had been arranged for the Glossop trip, but the Derbyshire club face a severe fixture backlog, having just qualified for the FA Vase Final against North Shields at Wembley.

Apart from having 11 league games still to play by 25 April - they are in a two-way fight with Runcorn Linnets for the sole promotion berth - they are in the League Cup Semi-Finals on Easter Saturday.

Town will be hoping that Glossop’s fixture congestion might yet work in their favour as they scrap for vital league points in their quest to avoid the drop.
