IT was not a classic, but it was tense with Saints scoring a last gasp winner.

All is well that ends well, but Saints gave their fans and coach Justin Holbrook a thorough test of the nerves.

After being two minutes away from the season ending, they live to fight another day.

Holbrook said: “The most pleasing thing from Thursday was that we won the game.

“Credit to Wakefield they played well and put us in a tough position.

“We panicked a bit in the second half and started trying to snatch the game with 30 minutes to go and came up with a few errors.

“I thought we settled down with 15 to go and came up with two big tries to win the game — that is the most pleasing thing.

“They shut us down - when the man was in the bin - with their tactic of kicking to touch.

“We had to create things, they clearly were not going to give us the win we had to earn it. That is what we did, which was pleasing.”

Holbrook had to swap things around with Ryan Morgan failing his head test, meaning Jonny Lomax had to move from six to centre.

The coach continued: “The combinations were a bit off. It did not help by losing Ryan Morgan gameday.

“That is always difficult - moving Jonny into the centres was tough because he had not even trained there.

“That was always going make it difficult –as did the way Wakefield played in the first half.

“It was fantastic we came up with the win. I thought it was a really good game of rugby league. Wakefield were outstanding and we fought all the way until the very end and got away with it.

“It was my second experience of ‘never write off the Saints’.

“We needed it, got it and I’m rapped.

“We kept coming and in the end came up with something to win it.”

Holbrook had praise for 19-year-old Matty Lees who made debut off the bench at prop.

“He went well in a tough game to make his debut and I thought he did a really good job.

“I have watched him since I came here – and he stepped up and played four really good games in the Reserves so deserved his chance” Holbrook said.
