AN indifferent Liverpool St Helens performance saw them lose heavily at Sefton and for the first time in a long time leave their travelling support feeling short-changed.

After bossing the game for the first half hour and leading, albeit by a narrow margin, 5-3, they contrived to concede five tries and 38 unanswered points in 25 minutes either side of half time. As the home side quite literally ran rings round them the Moss Laners simply had no answer. Three of the five tries started in LSH’s own half with a Sefton counter attack easily breaking the first line of LSH’s defence, and then they were gone, up the other end to score. Credit is due to a decent set of home team backs.

After an opening fifteen minutes in which LSH came close on three occasions, Sefton went ahead with a penalty. LSH hit back in the 29th minute with a pushover try from Mark Potter after a series of scrums close to the Sefton line.

Sefton scored a short range try themselves, converted to regain the lead and then in a portent of things to come, scored again when their open side flanker ran untouched through the LSH defence to score under the posts.

The second half, delayed after an injury to the referee, was a disaster for LSH. Sefton scored three tries, in the 51st, 57th and 63 minutes, all from distance and all with the Moss Laners trailing in their wake, to lead 38.5

LSH did rally to regain some pride, almost singlehandedly motivated by their skipper Darren Wilson. The little man had stood tall all afternoon and his efforts were rewarded with a fine 80 yard try from Jake Hodson in the 72nd minute and a short range try from Paddy Royle on the final whistle.

This Saturday LSH are at home to Wigan. 2.15 KO.
