NEWTON had to dig deep into their squad of players with over eight unavailable this week, but still managed to travel away with a strong team.

Ellesmere had a very big pack which looked like it had the better of Newton in the first few scrums, however this was short lived Newtons' pack had a greater stamina and took control for the rest of the game.

After a good build up using both forwards and backs Mike Rowe hit a gap and scored the first try. Five minutes later the home side hit back with a converted try.

Newton not to be outdone scored tree minutes later when Andy Mc Kenna shot over for a converted try. Just before the break Ellesmere scored again making it 12 all at half time

Newton opened the scoring when Sean Storey score a converted try after a lovely move by the backs.

Ellesmere came back again with another try.

Newton's backs had ripped Ellesmere to shreds but did not always capitalize on their domination, however Sean Storey did score a converted try after the backs had swept up field once again.

With the score 26-17 in Newtons' favor Ellesmere bombarded Newton's line for over ten minutes and eventually the defence cracked and Ellesmere scored the last try of the game, with the clock on 90 minutes.

Final score Newton sit second in the league after this game.

Newton's second team, Newton/Vulcan who play non league casuals rugby are at home on Saturday against Moore. The game is being played as a memorial to Mark Sawer and past players. KO 3pm at the Sports Club
