THE Livesey family had another successful weekend with Owen Livesey winning the gold medal at the European Open in Glasgow and sister Amy taking silver in the women’s tournament in Lisbon.

Owen Livesey made a successful return to the scene of his Commonwealth gold medal success, and produced a similar performance.

The Olympic hopeful from Haresfinch topped the podium in a strong -81kg category and collected 100 valuable points towards qualification for Rio.

Livesey was part of a Great Britain team that took eight medals at the Emirates Arena.

Livesey started in the second round with a contest that went the distance against Gadiel Miranda finishing a yuko score up on his opponent.

It was the same score in Livesey's second contest, defeating Israel’s Asaf Chen to reach the semi finals.

There he defeated compatriot, Stuart McWatt to set another showdown with now familiar foe Tom Reed.

The pair have already faced each other in numerous finals, including the Commonwealth Games and again Livesey came out on top to take the gold medal.

Livesey said: "It’s been a long day but a good day. I wanted to come here and get the 100 points and I did that so I’m happy.

"It’s the fifth final I’ve faced Tom in a final and it’s getting closer every time. Today I managed to catch him, but Tom’s a good fighter and I’m sure I’ll meet him in a final again.

"I love fighting at home, it gives my parents, family and coaches back home the chance to come and watch, it’s great to fight in front of them."

Meanwhile 21-year-old Amy Livesey won a silver in the Women’s European Judo Open in Lisbon, Portugal.

But she was so close in her defeat to Holland’s Jennifer Wichers in the -63 kg category.

She tweeted: “So close to a gold medal yesterday at the European open in Lisbon, losing on a shido. But happy to come away with a silver.”

Eccleston’s Lucy Renshall, another product of SKK took bronze in the same category.
