A ST Helens schoolgirl will be going for gold at the EUBC European Confederation Women’s Junior Boxing Championships next week.

Wildcard fighter Olivia Hussey heads to Hungary on August 15 after being selected for England.

The 15-year-old from Fingerpost will first attend a Great Britain training camp in Sheffield, and the 63kg fighter’s head coach, Dom Hodnett, says she is eyeing top spot.

“There’s only one goal with Liv, and that’s gold medals,” said Hodnett.

The European Championships come only a fortnight after Hussey collected gold at a tournament in Dublin.

The De La Salle student only took up boxing three years ago, but has caught the eye of selectors including Great Britain coach Amanda Groarke.

Groarke labelled the young fighter “simply outstanding” following a gruelling selection camp, in which potential England boxers were pushed to their physical and mental limits.

“She’s flying high,” added Hodnett.

“She’s a very, very talented boxer.

“On her last training camp she knocked them dead.

“They were blown away by her and she was the talk of the squad – I was telling them that two years ago!

“When she came she was a bit overweight and self conscious. She’s gone from that to a super hero in female boxing terms.”

St Helens super middleweight Martin Murray has also taken an interest, with the teenage prospect invited to train with him at coach Oliver Harrison’s gym in Salford last week.
