CLOCK Face Miners' first home game in their inaugural National Conference League game ended in defeat.

For long periods Clock defended well against Gateshead Storm's big forwards but ultimately they paid a price for poor discipline as they fell 18-16.

The North East outfit gained their second win of the season thanks to a penalty goal in the 63rd minute, with the outcome leaving Miners in 11th place in Division Three.

Clock started the game brightly when Connor Cutts barged his way over to score after five minutes, converted by Shaun Costello.

However, 17 minutes into the clash Clock gifted possession to the visitors in their own 30-metre area.

In the following set Gateshead moved the ball wide and Dominic Morris went over in the corner.

Storm could have taken the lead four minutes later but knocked on over the try line.

Clock Face scored next, Alex Burke racing 90 metres to score between the sticks giving Costello an easy conversion for a 12-4 lead.

Clock were in the ascendancy and seven minutes later went over again when Carl Lucas pounced on a neat grubber kick.

Costello missed with the difficult conversion attempt and Gateshead had the last laugh of the half when forward Davis Cash scored following a powerful drive.

The conversion was good, to narrow the deficit at half time to 16-10.

Ten minutes into the second half a Gateshead prop broke through and galloped 60 metres.

Although he was tackled inches short of the Clock try line, from the following play-the-ball the Gateshead full back went over.

The easy conversion levelled the scores before the game was sealed with the Gateshead penalty.

Clock thought they had rescued the game when Cutts barged his way over with three minutes to go but the try was chalked off.

Cutts was deemed to have been held up over the line.
