I WISH everything in sport could be explained but it certainly can’t. I wish I could offer an explanation why our form magically deserted us at the weekend.

It was like a wand was waved and from that point we forgot how to defend for 40 minutes.

The first half was very poor from us and not acceptable by any side wearing the red vee, but occasionally in sport things like that happen and I can’t tell you why.

I am in no way concerned that the weekend will deal a lasting blow to our confidence going forward, we just need to remain solid and ensure the positive momentum of the last three months isn’t forgotten due to three games against Wigan.

If you take those fixtures out of the equation we are unbeaten.

It is very easy for people to jump on the bandwagon as it sets off on its journey to write our team off.

People have been doing ever since I joined in 2002 and that wagon has been full more or less every year and always will be.

There is a saying nobody kicks a dead dog and we are far from deceased in terms of this year’s competition, regardless what people think, and the reason people keep writing us off is because we aren’t dead as a team.

We will keep dusting ourselves off and getting back to our feet. If anything the calls for us to fail in my time at the club, from wherever they originate, have always served to galvanise us going into the end of the season.

The reality is the only people that can win the competition this year for St Helens are the lads in the dressing room, not referees, journalists, commentators or anyone else.

Control the controllable factors and that is the only thing we can do.

We weren't good enough on Sunday and we apologise to the fans that turned up to support us in such numbers but we all need to believe that we can go on win some big games this year.

Following last week what we needed was an intense game and in Hull FC we have got such an opponent.

They have really come on as a side under Peter Gentle and pose a threat with the ball but more so I have been impressed by their defensive energy.

They get off their line faster than any other side in Super League and that will only be amplified by the KC Stadium which always brings the best out of them.

I can’t wait for the game and love playing at that ground.

The weekend was a huge chance to make some inroads into moving up the table but the next few weeks are massive should we have any designs on finishing in the top four this year. Hull will have a nasty aftertaste in their mouth following the forward pass try that cost them the game.

I really don't understand why the video ref can't judge on forward passes. I have never seen one that the camera angle distorts the pass in such a way that it is impossible to tell and should it not be clear cut then benefit of the doubt goes to the attacking team.

The touch judges clearly aren't able to make the decision, Steve Ganson did everything right on Saturday.

He got into a great position for awarding a try, looked to the touch judge for confirmation who told him it wasn't forward. We have the technology so why not use it when we can.

I look forward to seeing so many of our great supporters at Hull, it is always a good atmosphere and is sure to be a great game.

I just wanted to thank everybody who made the effort to support my first Testimonial event at Haydock Park. I spoke with lots of fans around the race course and everybody seemed to have a great time.

The day was a huge success and I want to thank everyone involved form Hattons Solicitors gold membership to the Testimonial Committee, especially Sue Mathias, whose military organisation of the event really shone through and finally Haydock Park for being such a beautiful venue on a fantastic day.

The next event to tell you s a Legends of Super League Night at Langtree Park on June 27 featuring Jamie Peacock MBE, Terry O’Connor OAP, Barrie McDermott VIP and Chris Joynt (I couldn’t think of a relevant acronym for Chris).

It should be a great night and Email: info@jonwilkin.co.uk should you want tickets as there are only a few left.
