SAINTS youngster Tommy Makinson is backing his team to go all the way this year.

With the play offs fast approaching, the 19-year old says his Saints team-mates are confident they can take on all challengers and take their game up a notch to see off the likes of Wigan and Warrington.

He told the Star: “We know ourselves that we can beat everyone. We’ve been there or thereabouts this season, sometimes losing by a try in the last minute or by a point.

“But we know deep down that from 1 to 29 we can do it, we’ve got some great players in our team, we’re a real unit and we’re quietly confident that we can do it.

“Wigan and Warrington are two great sides but we’re a great side in our own respect and like I say, we’re quietly confident. Those sides are very good, but we can step it up another gear and take it to them.”

Having the support and guidance of other younger players has helped Makinson’s progress this season as he has impressed with his pace and strength.

He added: “Playing with the likes of Jamie (Foster) who did it last year, he’s been through the play offs and a lot of other young players who’ve gone on to compete at the highest level.

“It’s really good playing alongside them, not only on the field, off the field you’re great mates and you know they’ve got your back and you know they’re going to make the tackle at the side of you if you need it.”

Makinson got his chance in the first team after Ade Gardner’s Achilles’ tendon injury left an opening.

Since then he has made 18 appearances for the club and scored 10 tries.

After recently signing a new two-year deal for the club he admits that this season has been a great experience.

He added: “It’s been pretty surreal this year. With Ade getting injured I’ve gone straight in at the deep end and I’ve got a lot of games under my belt and I’m really happy with how it’s going.

“You’ve got to adapt really quickly and learn from the players around you as well as those you’re playing against.

“I have played centre and full back for most of my time in the game but I play anywhere and playing wing has been a good experience especially getting a lot of help from the senior lads.

“I just go out and enjoy it really and give it my best.”
