VOTING continues on our best ever Saints Super League team.

It is 20 years since Super League kicked off – and to mark that over the next fortnight we are inviting readers to pick their best team, position by position.

Saints won the inaugural title in the double winning first season of 1996 – their first cup and title for 20 seasons and the trophies have followed over the next 20 years.

But who have been the players that have left that indelible mark on the history of Super League.

Voting is already under way for the full back position, but now we are asking supporters to pick their favourite winger.

At the end of one week will take out the one with most votes and ask you to vote again for the other wing position.

The candidates.

1. Welsh international flier Anthony Sullivan was prolific outside Paul Newlove in the early years of Super League.

A Back-to-back Wembley winner in 96 and 97, Sullivan won the cup again in 2001. He added to his inaugural Super League title with Grand Final wins in 1999 and 2000 and a World Club Challenge.

A naturally gifted player, with pace and a swerve.

2. Darren Albert was a player with genuine speed. The super-quick Aussie could accelerate past the opposition with the sound of a whoosh – and did so from 2002-2005.

He won the Super League in 2002 and the Challenge Cup in 2004.

3. Ade Gardner was one of the new breed of winger – and was very strong carrying the ball clearing the line with prop-forward type carries.

He also knew how to get over the whitewash and scored 31 tries in 33 appearances during Saints’ Grand Slam winning season of 2006. Very strong in the air, both defensively and offensively. He scored a crucial try in the 2007 win over Brisbane Broncos.

4. Francis Meli scored 145 tries in 224 appearances for Saints between 2006 and 2013. The powerful Kiwi international had a cracking debut season in the all-conquering 2006 campaign. Another strong ball carrier.

5. Tommy Makinson has made tight corner finishes his trademark.

The Wiganer is also very brave and alert attacking the high ball. Makinson leapt on to Paul Wellens’ kick to score the match-winning try at Old Trafford in 2014.
