IT is now 20 years since Super League kicked off – and what a couple of decades it has been.

Saints won the inaugural title in the double winning first season of 1996 – their first cup and title for 20 seasons.

The trophies have come in regularly with Saints winning the Super League Grand Finals in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2014.

And added to that they backed up 96 with Challenge Cup wins in 1997, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

We have seen stars too during those 20 years.

But who have been the players that have left that indelible mark on the history of Super League.

Over the next fortnight we will be giving readers the chance to vote for their best team, position by position, and will reveal the best Saints XIII of the Super League era after the votes are totted up.

Today’s position to vote on is full back.

The number one shirt is a straight choice between two genuine homegrown heroes.

Steve Prescott graced the full back shirt in the double winning campaign of 1996, scoring two tries in the Wembley win over Bradford.

A fantastic attacking player who played with a smile on his face, Prescott was also brave under the high ball and a firm fans favourite.

The other candidate is Mr St Helens himself, Paul Wellens, who skippered Saints to an unlikely Grand Final success in 2014 – some 15 seasons after taking his first ring in 1999.

Rock solid in defence and under-rated in attack, Wellens won Man of Steel, Harry Sunderland and Lance Todd awards in his time at Saints.

Both are true legends of the game.
