SAINTS are optimistic that Australian scrum half Luke Walsh will be back in the fold in time for the Super League opener against Catalans on 6 February.

The team’s linchpin had initially feared his career was over when he broke his leg and damaged his ankle in an innocuous incident in the Widnes home game last July.

But those worries were quickly dispelled, and despite a slight setback on the ankle, Walsh has progressed well meaning that barring any further mishaps he will partner his old mate Travis Burns for the clash against the Dragons.

New head coach Keiron Cunningham said: “Luke is back running again – it has had a million x-rays, scans and specialists views and the leg is 100 per cent fine.

“There has been a bit of a grumble with his ankle which has held him back – if he is not ready next week for Wigan he would be fit if there was a friendly the week after.

“Hopefully, fingers crossed, if he does not have any setbacks he will be kicking a ball for us in round one.”

Although he will not be rushed back if not ready, Cunningham declared that they do need him on the park as soon as possible.

And there is a tangible feeling of anticipation of seeing the team run out with two out-and-out halves for the first time since Tommy Martyn and Sean Long called the shots.

And there are high hopes that the duo could build a lasting partnership that goes beyond this term.

Cunningham said: “The earlier we can get Luke back and running with the team the better.

“I recall seeing him when he first came I was blown away by the way he was running the team – it was like having Sean Long out there again.

“It excites me having Travis Burns and Walshy together. They are old mates and good mates off the field and will add a lot to the side.

“I’d like to think they could forge a partnership for a good few years.”

Walsh’s second year runs out in October, but he does have an option on a third year that he can take up if he decides to stay on.

Cunningham believes a good, positive year could be a decisive factor.

“Luke has an option on a third year – it is in his favour, but if he is enjoying his rugby and things are going well I’d like to think we can have some influence in his future,” he said.

Of the other long term casualties Jon Wilkin is fit and could play against Widnes on Sunday, with Jonny Lomax described as “there or thereabouts” and ready within the next two weeks.
