IN the Ray Digman KO cup first round St Helens Town first team played Liverpool at Aigburth in a 45 over cup match.

Town’s new captain, 22-year-old Craig Woods, lost the toss and Liverpool batted. Liverpool, struggled early on against some good bowling from openers James Davies 3 for 48 and Phil Murgatyoyd 1 for 41 off their allotted 9 overs.

Matty Fisher bowled tidy off spin assisted by Woods and Liam Gaskell and Mike Stark. Liverpool eventually got 240 of 45 overs with 42 extras.

Town’s batsmen got off to a poor start slumping to 30 for 3, Stark joined Skipper Woods at the crease and together they put on 114.

Stark fell LBW scoring 70 off 75 balls including 10 fours and 3 sixes.

At 144 off 4 off 35 overs, Town looked in control, with Woods playing the Liverpool seamers and spinners with ease. He and Ryan Donnelly put on 38 for the eighth wicket to take the score to 196. With 40 runs required and five overs left, it was still game on, but Woods, scoring 84 off 80 balls, finally ran out of partners with the score on 204 all out.
