AS A 'native' of St Helens for far more than 80 years, may I share a little of our town's history with you,

especially when we can still learn from it.

How many readers can recall Tyrers' motto being painted hugely on a gable end in Dentons Green Lane,

(opposite to the now Deaf Resource Centre) which simply read: "The customer is always right"?

I well remember this throughout the war years and for years thereafter. Now let us consider that with this as their guiding motto, the firm of Tyrers has prospered in our town since 1888 and is still so important to our failing town centre.

It is a motto which will outlive the Hardshaw Centre. When will the bosses there ever learn about the much missed public seating.
