NINE teenagers have been released on bail by detectives investigating a vicious attack in Sherdley Park that has left a 17-year-old boy fighting for his life.

The victim is in the intensive care unit at Walton Hospital in Liverpool where he has undergone brain surgery after sustaining serious head injuries during the violence last Thursday (May 22) evening.

Four other youngsters were also injured.

Over the past three days detectives in St Helens have made nine arrests. Six boys and two girls were questioned on suspicion of a 'section 18 assault' (grievous bodily harm with intent).

The boys, three aged 16 and two 17, have been bailed along with two 16-year-old girls. A 15-year-old girl arrested in connection with violent disorder has also been bailed.

Police have interviewed a number of witnesses to the violence that happened near to pets corner in Sherdley Park, at about 7.30pm, but want more to come forward.

It is not clear how many youngsters were actually in the park at that time, however, police say a "large group of girls and boys were in the park both prior to the incident and at around the time of the assault".

They add that the park was "very busy that evening" and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement released on Friday, Superintendent Peter Edge from the police in St Helens, said: "This was a vicious assault which appears to have been unprovoked. Merseyside Police is committed to keeping our parks and open spaces safe for everyone who wants to enjoy them.

"Violence will not be tolerated and we would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

"It appears that the offenders may have been with a larger group of people. It may be that some individuals in that group may not have been a part of this dreadful act, which has left a boy in a critical condition.

"I would urge those people to do the right thing and tell us what they know. We are determined to find those responsible and local people should be reassured that we are carrying out extensive enquiries."

  • Any witnesses and anyone with information in relation to the incident are asked to call St Helens CID via 0151 709 6010 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
