FIREFIGHTERS gave a dramatic demonstration in a rainy St Helens, how they rescue people trapped cars following a traffic collision.
The weather did little to prevent crowds of people watching, as the crews sliced their way into the two vehicles.
It marked National Road Safety Day, urging people to reduce their speed and keep a two second gap between the vehicle in front.
Watch Manager John Cousins, who has organised the events, said: “The demonstrations will be as real as possible and will offer an insight into how we help victims involved in collisions.
“In taking part, members of the public will be given the opportunity to experience how we deal with these incidents. It will hopefully educate people and help reduce the number of collisions on Merseyside’s roads.”
Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Phil Garrigan, added: “Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is now called to rescue more people from road traffic accidents than fires.
“As a result, our crews in Merseyside know better than anyone the devastating impact that such accidents can have on families and our communities and they have to deal with the aftermath of such incidents on a daily basis.
“This campaign is about raising awareness of the risks on our roads and encouraging people to drive more responsibly.”
