AWARD-WINNING Valley Brass Band is inviting adults to learn to play a musical instrument.

It’s a chance to discover hidden talent, make new friends and possibly even perform.

Conductor Dave Chadwick, aged 40, from Haydock, said: “There are people who have never tried an instrument and would like to have a go.

“There are others who wish they’d never packed in and would have loved to carry on, if only they had that opportunity, and retired people looking to keep active or people in their 30s and 40s with spare time.

“It’s not that difficult, we work in small groups and instruments can be loaned and tuition provided.”

Dave formed the band in 1992, due to the demise of the free music service in the local area.

Since then he has taught thousands of children and the band has soared to success.

Dave said: “We’ve won tons of prizes and awards, the national championships four times and we were runners-up twice. We’ve also produced national solo champions.

“We’ve got the facility to teach to a high standard if people want to achieve.

“Being in a band really gives you that sense of self-worth.”

Band chairman Keith Deakin, who is an Earlestown councillor, was the first adult recruit and has been learning the E flat bass for six weeks.

Cllr Deakin, aged 68, of Haydock, said: “You’re never too old to learn. I never learned music at school and now I’m really enjoying it.

“It is a great feeling to pull out a piece of music and play a tune. I practise every day and still have a lot to learn, but I’m determined to master this.

“I’m hoping I’ll be good enough to play with them at Christmas.

“It is down to teamwork. Everyone has a part to play in making a melody.”

Five adults have signed up so far. The band is also keen to encourage former players who want to start again and musicians interested in helping with tuition.

Dave, added: “We’re always looking for people to volunteer and help. Musicians might like to give something back.”

The band rehearses at The Richard Evans annexe at Legh Vale Primary School in Haydock, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
