ST HELENS Town has paid tribute to a "club stalwart" who has passed away just short of his 83rd birthday.

A long serving member of St Helens Town AFC, Dave Watkins is regarded as one of the most respected figures at the club after supporting the club for decades, and through their most testing moments.

A huge supporter of grassroots football, Dave was also a highly regarded member of Liverpool County FA and St Helens Referees Society.

With the news of Dave's sad passing being announced this morning (Wednesday, May 1), a club statement from St Helens Town reads:

"St Helens Town are saddened to hear the news of the passing of club stalwart Dave Watkins.

"Dave, who was just short of celebrating his 83rd birthday, spent many years supporting grassroots football across the county, and was a highly regarded member of the Liverpool County FA, where he held many roles including President and Board Member, as well as being a member of various committees.

"Locally, Dave was a stalwart of the St Helens Football Combination and St Helens Referees Society, working tirelessly to support all local clubs, their officials, players, and volunteers.

"Outside of football, Dave was a staunch supporter of Cowley Language College, where he sat as a Governor for a number of years.

"Dave was a long serving member of the St Helens Town AFC committee and despite his numerous other footballing commitments, was always a regular supporter at Town's former home Houghton Road, and subsequent venues during Town's nomadic period in Ashton, Atherton, and Prescot before our return to St Helens and Ruskin Sports Village.

"Dave was well known on the terraces and in many club board tooms and his loss will be mourned at clubs across Merseyside.

"Our sincere condolences go to all Dave's family, friends, and footballing colleagues.

"The St Helens footballing community has lost a great servant and a thoroughly nice bloke."
