A MAN and a woman have been released on bail as police continue to investigate an "unexplained" death.

Officers were called to the YMCA hostel on North Road, St Helens, at around 4.30pm on Tuesday, April 9, by paramedics, who had attended to reports of a man in his 40s requiring medical assistance. 

The man was sadly confirmed dead at the scene and his next of kin have been notified and are being supported by officers.

Forensic and witness inquiries are ongoing, say police.

A 52-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody to be questioned.

A police spokesman confirmed on Thursday morning that both suspects have since been conditionally bailed pending further inquiries.

The death remains unexplained at this stage, pending investigations.

On Wednesday, Detective Inspector Steve Byrom said: “We have arrested two people in connection with this incident, which is initially being treated as unexplained pending further enquiries. 

“I would urge anyone who has any information to come forward at the earliest opportunity to assist this investigation. You can speak to us directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers.”
