POLICE have shared shocking footage of the moment a HGV driver crashed into the back of stationary traffic, causing serious injury.

The driver, Ian Halliday, from Rainhill, was sentenced at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates' Court on Thursday (April 4).

Emergency services attended the scene of the multi-vehicle crash at Speke Boulevard, in Liverpool, which took place on the morning of December 4, 2023, shortly before 9.30am. 

Halliday, 45, of Toftwood Gardens, Rainhill, was charged with causing serious injury by careless/inconsiderate driving in connection with the crash.

He indicated a guilty plea to the offence at the magistrates' court on March 12.

Halliday caused a serious injury to a female by driving a Scania HGV without due care and attention.

The footage shared by police showed the moment his vehicle crashed into the back of a stationary car bearing a 'Learner driver' sign.

 

The crash also caused damage to several other vehicles as the impact from Halliday's HGV caused the car to collide into others.

Halliday appeared back in court yesterday Thursday, April 4, and was sentenced.

He was given a 26-week term of imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

The 45-year-old must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and pay £274 in court costs.

He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months, and a retest will be required.

Sharing the video of the crash, Merseyside Roads Policing Unit said: "This dash cam footage shows a serious injury RTC from December last year.

"The driver of this HGV didn’t notice stationary traffic and collided into it.

"Driver has been sentenced at court and handed a suspended prison sentence, disqualification and must retake test."
