VAST crowds packed into Church Square, St Helens as indie rockers The K’s headlined a music show to celebrate St Helens’ Christmas lights switch on.

The highly rated Earlestown band - who are set to release their first album - played a selection of hits in front of hundreds who gathered to watch the event on a chilly but clear Saturday evening.

There was a huge number of young families in town, with many enjoying the fairground rides and festive activities that had run throughout the day.

Pride of St Helens Child of Courage winners Lucy Lowe and Lincoln Huyton were joined by the Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Lynn Clarke to switch on the lights in front of the biggest crowds a local Christmas lights switch on has seen in years.

The display includes impressive new lights on the Church Square tree.

In previous year’s the illuminations have come under fire from social media users.
