JC'S Amateur Boxing Club in St Helens had more fighters in national finals at the weekend than any other establishment in the country.

Kai Birch, 17, Tyler McIntyre, 16, Mason Wainwright, 15, and Rhianna Neal, 15, all reached class finals in the first National Association of Boys and Girls Club Boxing Championships since the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

The quartet represented the Jackson Street gym in Bridlington on Saturday.

Birch won gold with a unanimous decision from the judges against Newham's Matty Artell in a Class C 48-51kg battle.

Wainwright was defeated by a 3-2 split judges' decision in a Class A 46-48kg contest with Jaylen Howell from St Mary's ABC in Chatham.

Neal's Class A 54-57kg match-up with Impact ABC's Grace Massey went the same way, another narrow defeat by a 3-2 split judges' decision.

Unfortunately, McIntyre's scheduled contest with RABC's Adam Morris in Class B at 44-46kg was cancelled due to an issue with a medical card.

Head coach Ste Birch paid tribute to the hard work of volunteer coaches Tony Moir, Gary Talbot, Shane Booth, Hannah Palfrey and Jill May as well as club secretary Kerry Birch for all their time, effort and commitment.
