DRIVERS are being warned of two road closures to avoid on major highways close to St Helens this week.

The closures have been administered by National Highways to continue the repair of major roads and motorways.

This week there will be overnight closures of certain parts of the M6 to continue construction work and the installation of the smart motorway.

There will also be an overnight closure on part of the A580 East Lancs dual carriageway.

The closures are expected to cause motorists delays of between 10 and 30 minutes.

Diversion routes will be signposted for each closure.

Road closures:

  • M6, from 9pm August 20 to 6am October 31, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M6 northbound and southbound, j21A to J26 - Lane closure for inspection/survey and construction improvement/upgrade.
  • A580, from 9pm September 27 to 5am September 28, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M6 southbound, junction 23 to A580 - Lane closures for barriers.
