WINDLE Bowling Club hosted a prestigious national competition at the weekend.

The British Crown Green Ladies Bowling Association Dorothy Piearce Memorial Pairs Final was held at the club on Hard Lane. This prestigious Competition attracted more than sixty top-flight bowlers to compete on the clubs pristine greens.

Bowlers travelled from numerous parts of the country to compete in a fascinating one day elimination tournament.

The pairs competition attracted bowlers representing clubs from North Yorkshire to North Warwickshire.

Windle proved to be an ideal venue and combined with the enthusiastic support from members, which the club said provided a memorable occasion of which the club and the borough can be proud.

Spectators were treated to more than 40 matches played on the club's two spacious greens.

The final between the teams from North Warwickshire and Yorkshire was completed in heavy rain, but even this did not dampen the competitors’ enthusiasm who showed great determination to conclude a very successful day.

The final was won by Yorkshire and they made history by being the first winners from the White Rose County.

The presentation was made by Lynsey Gorman, of BCGLBA.

BCGLBA officials and Merseyside County officials were very pleased with the location, the hospitality, organisation and the warm welcome afforded to them by Windle Bowling Club.

The club says that the BCGLBA will give consideration to take more of their main competitions to Windle, with the Ladies Senior Individual Merit, played in July, and the Men’s World Club Championship, a Sunday competition played through the bowling season, touted.

Peter Case, chairman of the club was delighted with the response from the competitors and spectators alike.

He said: “It is only in more recent times that ladies have been invited to become full members of Windle Bowling Club.

"It is therefore a great achievement to have been invited by the BCGLBA to host a National Ladies Competition.

"We are all looking forward to hosting further events of this type to enhance the image of our enjoyable and relaxing game."
