A KIND-hearted teenager has shaved off her long locks in support of her 14-year-old friend and neighbour who lost his own hair due to cancer.

Ciara Gibbons from Newton-le-Willows decided after coming home from the hospital to visit neighbour Harvey Jones, who was diagnosed with leukaemia a month ago.

Her mum proudly cut off the 17-year-old’s ponytail - which will be sent off to become a wig for other cancer patients, along with the £1,480 she raised - and her dad shaved off the remaining fuzz.

Carmel College student, Ciara said: “I feel really good that I’ve done this, it feels great but it will take some getting used to.

“I decided to do it on our way home from seeing him and said well if it was me in his place I think he’d shave his head, plus I know that his hair is more precious to him than mine is to me.

“Me being bald for a while is nothing in comparison to what he is going through, it’s just my way of showing my support.”

Her mum Liz Gibbons, a nurse at the Walton Centre, added: “It was such an emotional day, we had a few friends round and shaved off her hair.

“I’m really proud of her for doing it because it shows how she thinks about others.

“We are very close to Harvey and his family and this is just Ciara’s way of showing our support.

“Harvey loves it and it really made him smile, he liked the idea anyway but seeing it was great - which is just as wonderful since he is going through so much.”

Ciara’s hair will be sent off the Little Princess Trust.
