A PARALYMPIAN footballer paid a visit to Eccleston Mere Primary School to inspire some of the next generation.

Blind footballer Roy Turnham turned up with guide dog Pudsey to help put pupils through their paces with some exercise routines.

Youngsters also had the chance to speak to Roy in a special assembly as he gave a talk to inspire the children and show what can be achieved even in the face of difficulty.

Roy played in the London 2012 Games for the British team and has made many caps for England and is due to feature in next month's World Cup to be held in Spain.

The event, which took place on Friday morning (May 18) was organised by year five teacher and PE co-ordinator Gareth Helsby and also helped raise funds for sports equipment at the school.

Pupils did four separate minute-long exercises led by Roy and 'Sportivator' Pio Villar Sevillano, from Sports for Schools.

The children were encouraged by their watching schoolmates as they took on the exercises in the school hall.

"It creates a fun environment and hopefully the kids can enjoy doing the exercises," said Roy.

"I also talk to them about my experience to give them some positive messages and inspire them.

"When I first started (going to schools), I wasn't aware of what effect it could have but I think having seen some of the feedback that's some through, it's had a really positive effect.

"It isn't just turning up at the school, this cold have a really positive effect on everybody's life."

Acting head teacher Sue Hesketh added: "It's really to inspire the children and to motivate them as to what they can do in the future. They have been really excited about Roy coming in."
