WITH today marking150 years to the day that St Helens was officially formed - we are sharing some photos from the year the town celebrated its centenary.

These pictures depict some of the scenes from 1968 - which marked 100 years since Queen Victoria granted a Charter of Incorporation, defining St Helens officially as a municipal borough.

To mark the town's 150th anniversary, a variety of events will be staged which include an International Food and Drink Festival, a heritage weekend and projections of light on landmark sites.

Other activities will build on established events such as Westfield Street Music Festival and Summer Streets.

A programme of artistic events is also being led by the Heart of Glass and art and cultural partners called St Helens 150.

This has kicked off with the Where Things Are Different project, which was created by artist Stephen King and features light boxes and images near the World of Glass museum.

This aims to highlight the stories that could have been forgotten about the town's industrial past by sharing social experience, memories, stories and folklore held by the St Helens community.

The project has seen Stephen work closely with people who were employed in mining or other industries across St Helens as they shared their experiences of being displaced workforces.
