PRIDE of Britain winner George Mathias has added another award to his belt after being honoured with the Points of Light prize from Prime Minister Theresa May.

The 11-year-old from Eccleston was thrilled to be the 881st person to pick up the award, which recognises outstanding volunteers throughout the UK.

This follows the inspiring schoolboy running more than 100 miles with a host of celebrities to raise more than £55,000 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, as a way of thanking them for saving his little brother James’ life.

This has included top stars of screen and sport including Liverpool Football Club legends Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as well as comedian John Bishop.

The first £25,000 has already been used to buy a specially-heated cot for premature babies in the Special Care Baby Unit - with George showing no signs of stopping.

His dad Richard Mathias said: “It was totally unexpected for George to win the Points of Light award and we are absolutely thrilled and honoured as there are so many deserving people out there.

“It has completely inspired him to keep going and to do even more running through 2018.”

A letter sent along with the award from the Prime Minister said: “You should be enormously proud of the transformational impact your fundraising is having on young children in need of specialist hospital treatment, and for inspiring thousands of people to support your vital cause.”

George was also featured in the recent edition of Runner’s World as one of the Heroes of running for 2017 and is planning upcoming runs with other celebrities such as celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr, field hockey player Sam Quek MBE and TV presenter Dermot O’Leary.
