A CREATIVE schoolgirl has won this year’s design a road safety banner competition.

Ava Wall, from St Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School in St Helens, impressed judges with her eye-catching design.

The nine-year-old beat hundreds of hopefuls and was presented with a giant banner of her design to display during Road Safety Week which runs from November 21-26.

Ava, one of 13 winners across the country, received a trophy and her school received 210 high visibility drawstring bags for pupils donated by Recognition Express.

Alan Stones, director of Recognition Express Warrington, said: “This competition is one of the highlights of our year and we really look forward to receiving the children’s designs.

“The results are always fantastic and we are sure that Ava’s banner will encourage people to think more about road safety.”

Children aged four to 11 were challenged to design a banner to illustrate this year’s road safety message Speed Down Save Lives.

More than 3,500 entries were received nationally.

Road Safety Week is the UK's biggest road safety event involving thousands of schools, organisations and communities.

This year’s campaign focuses on the dangers of driving too fast. Breaking the speed limit or travelling too fast for conditions was recorded by police at crash scenes as a contributory factor in 23 per cent of fatal crashes in 2015 and shows that drivers with one speeding violation annually are twice as likely to crash as those with none.
