THOUSANDS of people turned up to watch the annual Christmas lights switch on in St Helens town centre tonight.
90s boyband 5ive had the crowds dancing to their hit songs while the beautiful voice of former X Factor contestant Alisah Bonaobra had people feeling the Christmas spirit.
Community talent was also showcased with Pride of Britain winner George Mathias taking to the stage as well as the choir from Broad Oak Primary who recently won the national Over the Rainbow competition.
A huge number of young families packed into Vicitoria Square for the entertainment, which lasted three hours.
Reaction on social media was divided, with some celebrating the entertainment put on for crowds but others criticising St Helens Council for staging an event that racks up thousands in costs.
On Facebook, Emma Parr wrote: "Loved it we was at the front, great atmosphere."
