AS a comment states on the Star’s Facebook page: ‘Venues like this are dropping like flies but this one goes from strength to strength.’ And it does seem that The Owls Nest, in Haydock, is bucking the trend which has seen many areas without a local pub due to financial unsustainability.

Debra Cunningham and partner John Walker took over the pub seven years ago. It had been John’s local for many years and despite the couple being advised not take on the tenancy of The Owls Nest they decided to give it a go.

Debra said: “There were some lovely people frequenting the place, however it had fallen into disrepair and had acquired a terrible reputation which resulted in the pub’s rapid decline. It was running at a loss and destined for closure.”

But it was through sheer determination and hard work that the new landlords managed to turn the pub’s fortunes around.

“We worked ridiculous hours to the point of exhaustion trying desperately to improve things. Bills started to stockpile and the run down building just wasn’t up to task.

“But our passion and enthusiasm for the place kept us going, our high standards and good service started to gain us more custom.”

Just as things were improving John had a heart attack and had to have a quadruple bypass. Despite this the pair carried on with their mission to create the perfect pub.

Debra said: “It was a massive blow and totally unexpected, but we soldiered on. I think it was then that the new Owls Nest surfaced as we gained admiration and trust from customers due to our determination not to give up.

“We had overwhelming support from the local community that kept us going. This is the basis of our wonderful pub today.”

The pub has developed a community spirit where lifelong friends are made and people of all ages can sit together in harmony, according to Debra.

“Local pubs like these seem to be a thing of the past but we are a true testament that they are well and truly needed in society.”

The business eventually became profitable and without going down the food route that so many do to stay afloat. In 2015, Red Oak Taverns took over 150 pubs, including The Owls Nest, owned by another company that had gone into administration. It was then that the establishment was given a much needed makeover.

“They had money to invest and were inspired by our hard work and success, so they chose us to become their flagship pub of the north.

“We were finally able to deliver a five star establishment worthy of our exceptional clientele,” added Debra.

Asked if Debra has any plans to shine the same success on another pub she declared: “No, our hearts are well and truly with this pub and community.

“We will continue to push forward with this one – we are planning to improve the beer garden and utilise it for family days and barbecues.”

The Owls Nest already offers an array of activities and to entertain customers, such as live acts, DJs, karaoke and quiz nights. They also have nine TV screens showing BT and Sky Sports and dominoes and pool teams and are hoping to set up a darts team.

Debra added: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this accolade and cannot thank everyone enough for taking the time and trouble to vote for us.”
