THE town hall Union flag will fly at half-mast to commemorate the late Tom van Vollenhoven whose funeral takes place today.

The funeral service of the legendary wingman, who joined Saints from rugby union, will take place in South Africa today.

The flags at Saints' stadium have been flying at half-mast this week and the Steve Prescott bridge has been lit red and white in the evenings.

The 'Flying Springbok' scored 392 tries from 408 appearances in Saints colours between 1957 and 1968, becoming a strong favourite with fans.

In 2000, he was inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame.

Tom, born in Bethlehem, Free State in South Africa on April 29, 1935 died last Saturday (October 21) aged 82.

Saints placed a Book of Condolence at the main reception of the Totally Wicked Stadium for supporters to leave messages in honour of 'Voll'.

It will be in situ until Friday, November 3 for anyone who wants to pay their respects to the Saints’ legend.

Saints will then send the book over to Tom’s family in South Africa.
