YEAR 7 students at St Cuthbert’s were given some live-saving tips after having first-aid sessions delivered by the British Red Cross.

There were 176 pupils at the Catholic High School who took part in the fun and interactive sessions during a day-long event.

These was given to students by Carmel Parr from the Youth Education Team of the British Red Cross.

The British Red Cross operates fully-funded workshops for 10 to 19-year-olds designed to help young people actively learn first aid skills.

The organisation uses age appropriate scenarios to build young people’s confidence and willingness to help in a first aid emergency, including those related to knife crime or drug and alcohol use.

First aid skills learned included situations when people are unresponsive and breathing, unresponsive and not breathing, bleeding and with head injuries.

The tailored first aid workshop helped students assess and manage risks and make informed decisions and how to support others.

After the day, Carmel said: “The students have been brilliant, taking part in all the practical activities with lots of enthusiasm and a keen desire to learn.”

Head teacher of St Cuthbert’s Cath Twist added: “We believe first aid is a life skill that everyone can and should learn.

“We want all our year 7 students to have the opportunity to learn the skills and gain the confidence to save lives."
