CHILDREN who took part in a five-week sports activity camp aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour over the summer holidays have received top prizes for taking part.

The Fuzzfest sports camp, organised by PCSOs in Newton-le-Willows, had around 50 children involved over the five weeks ranging from age four to 16, at Hope Academy.

These included bubble football, tennis, rounders, football, rugby and cricket, with funding from Wargrave Big Local and Regenda Housing and coaching from Saints.

The six winners, Reece Byrne 11, Andrew Davis 12, Olivia Kruger 13, Morgan Hughes 14, Dylan and Ruby Bourne both nine and four-year-old Parker McClymont won different prizes such as tickets to the Manchester United Stadium Tour, Sandcastle Water Park Tickets, Knowsley Safari Park, Blue Planet Aquarium, Farmer Teds and signed pictures from Everton FC players.

They were praised with individual awards such as excellent commitment, sense of humour, maturity and technique were handed out by Chief Inspector Steve Brizell.

He said:

The PCSO’s involved are Emma Stevens, Ian Hinton, Lydia Crook, Jordan Conley and Natalie Gabriel.

They said: “We run it last year and we got around 30 children involved but the kids in the area kept asking for us to do it again so we couldn’t say no.

“Around 50 children took part in the end ranging from four to 16 years old in the events held three days a week.

“It’s been great fun and we hope to hold it again next year, the idea is if they are having fun they won’t be on the streets causing trouble – but they also really enjoyed it and we did too.

“We’ve really got to know them.”
