A FURNITURE shop is closing its doors after more than 32 years in business.

Family run George Street Suites, has been selling sofas and armchairs to St Helens families since 1984, but due to dwindling footfall in the town centre and to independent stores, is set to close on May 27.

Owner Mike Emblem, 62, from Prescot said: “I am not bitter about it, fact is that time changes things, but we are not sorry for ourselves.

“We have loved serving the people in the town centre for so long and would love to thank each and every one of our customers. I’d happily have a few as neighbours.”

The dad-of-three added: “It is sad that independent places have to close but also it is to be expected as time goes on.

“The growing popularity of retail parks, which are so convenient with everything in one place and free parking, and the internet, means that many people can buy similar goods more conveniently.

“In 20 more years, there won’t be any shops that aren’t big brands anymore but that’s okay. Times change, but it is a shame.”

George Street Suites are selling off all of its stock until May 27. For more information enquire in store.
