A CANCER survivor with a zest for life is looking for volunteers to help other victims develop a fighting spirit.

Mum-of-three Sam Lewis launched a support group, Sam’s Diamonds, two years ago to give young women the strength and resilience to conquer the disease.

Through friendship, fun-filled activities, workshops, inspirational talks and social events, the charity has empowered almost 100 women to take back control of their lives.

The group has recently moved premises to Bold Street, St Helens and more volunteers are now needed to accompany a growing number of ladies as they journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Former secondary school PE and dance teacher Sam, 42, was diagnosed with an aggressive stage two cancer after discovering a lump in her breast in 2012.

She underwent six months of chemotherapy, a full mastectomy and radiotherapy and recalls feeling frightened and isolated as she recovered.

“You are shell-shocked,” she said. “You feel completely lost and lonely. You put on a front for everyone else but inside you’re in bits.

“The thing I struggled most with was that I had no-one around me going through what I was.”

Sam decided to make a pledge to make sure women no longer felt on their own and quit her job and now strives to help women ‘sparkle in their fight against cancer’.

“I’m only young,” added Sam. “I want to be out living my life and doing things with my kids.

“Our ladies now support each other. One woman said she wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for Sam’s Diamonds.

“We aim to keep women actively involved with various activities, having fun and loving life.”

Sam is planning a fashion show on June 24 to boost women’s self esteem and raise funds.

“Our diamonds will be the models and our kids will be on the catwalk with us,” she said.

“They feel a bit nervous. It is the confidence issue but once they step out on stage it will be amazing.”

The charity is appealing for volunteers to help with admin, co-ordinating activities and fundraising. Training will be provided.

The group has referrals from Macmillan nurses, oncology specialists and counsellors.
