A FAMOUS pickler is backing a supermarket's search to find the best food and drink suppliers in the North West.

Barton’s Pickles from Parr, which was started in a cottage kitchen at the turn of the 20th century, has its jars stocked on the shelves of Morrisons.

Now it is supporting a campaign that would see other local gems, grown or made within the North West, secure places.

Bartons originally prepared pickles by hand and sold them through the street of the town on a hand cart.

They moved into the mainstream after being approached by Morrisons in 2015.

Barton’s delivers weekly into Morrisons North West distribution centre and its sales have increased in all the stores it’s stocked in.

Joanna Barton, the great granddaughter of the founders and the owner of the firm, said: “We couldn’t have done this without the advice and time given by the Morrisons efficient and caring buying team.

“Having a top customer like Morrisons helps us grow and provides us with the confidence to continue investing.

“We are looking to grow again next year and with a manageable step-by-step growth programme we’d be delighted to grow in time to become a Morrisons’ National Pickle Supplier.

“We wish to thank Morrisons for their support.”

In their search for the next ‘Bartons Pickles’, Morrisons buyers will invite the best local suppliers to showcase their products at an event in Lancashire at the beginning of April.

Successful suppliers will then have the opportunity to be listed in Morrisons stores alongside Barton’s, Real Lancashire Eccles Cakes and local cheeses and ales.

Lauren Sayward, Morrisons regional manager, said: “Our customers tell us they want to see even more food that is made in the region and that’s why we’re asking the best suppliers to get in touch.”

The closing date for the event in Lancashire is Friday March 10.
