A DAD inspired by his younger brother's battle to overcome cancer a decade ago is planning to run 11 different events over 11 months.

Dan Slater, from Rainford, says he has started running for charity after seeing how much they have helped others.

The 31-year-old is the elder brother of Ian Slater, 27, whose fight with leukaemia in 2006 – when aged 16 – was covered by the Star 11 years ago.

Dan says Ian's life was saved thanks to twin brother Thomas who acted as a bone marrow transplant.

He added: "So I wanted to do something for cancer research. But then I started to think of other charities, like the Alzheimer’s Society and the Cancer Teenage Trust and it just grew from there.

“I have five events lined up already, including the Manchester Winter Run this Sunday, but I need to find others so I can run one each month.

“Sadly I missed January but I will keep going for the rest of the year. I hope to raise around £6,000 in total but any amount would be brilliant to help these charities.

“I have an 11-year-old daughter Caitlyn and I hope that she will be proud of me and it will show her that it is good to help others, though she is a good girl already.”

Dan, who works at Palletland on Burtonhead Road, St Helens will be running the event on Sunday for Cancer Research, then:

- The St Helens 10K for The Steve Prescott Foundation on Sunday March 6,

- The Marie Curie Manchester Marathon for the charity on Sunday April 2

- A half marathon for the Greater Manchester Run on Sunday May 28, which he will be raising money for Cancer Research again in tribute to a relative with terminal cancer

- The Great North Run on Sunday September 10 for The Cancer Teenage Trust in tribute to his brother.
