A CHURCH which is more than a century old has issued a desperate appeal for funds to ensure the building can continue serving the community.

St Mark's Church on North Road was built in 1883, and has been a central part of the community with its recognisable spire a characteristic feature of the town's landscape.

The church, designed by James Gandy, was funded by Sir David Gamble.

However, church members are issuing an SOS call with the building in urgent need of thousands of pounds of repair.

The roof and spire are now leaking and the old heating system has broken down. Kitchen and toilet facilities are also in need of updating.

Such is the state of the building, that members have had to meet at an alternative venue at the Gamble Hall during the winter because of the cold temperatures.

"We can't actually heat it so we are in desperate need of taking some funds," said parishioner Martin Litherland, who is leading the fundraising campaign.

"We are trying to apply for grants and we are opening it up for lots of things like tots clubs to serve the community.

"But without the heating and essential repairs it's not looking good at the moment. It has been an important church for a long time as we are looking to raise the money to keep it going."

To help people can drop donations into the appeal fund box in the church entrance foye or post them to St mark's, 160 North Road, St helens, WA10 2TZ.
