GLASS giants Pilks have submitted plans for a cutting edge energy recovery facility that would be capable of producing 15MW of electricity.

Proposals have been received by the council for the facility at the Greengate site on Sherdley Road, with the determination deadline set for February.

In October 2014, Pilks shared plans to develop an energy facility at its Cowley Hill site but later pulled them.

However, the firm revealed last summer its plans for a similar scheme at the Greengate site.

The Star previously reported that, if approved, the development will mean the creation of around 200 jobs during construction and up to 20 jobs once operational.

The proposals were submitted following a series of pre-consultation events for councillors, businesses and residents.

Pilks have formed a link with utility company, ESB, in a bid to develop the green technology.

The application says the facility would supply electricity to Pilks’ manufacturing operations at Greengate and Watson Street Works as well as surplus power to national grid.

The existing administration building, car park and security building would be demolished and replaced with a purpose built multi-storey car park, new building and security lodge, and a new electrical substation and administration car park.

During consultation, four support letters were received in favour of the plans. One said: “Such investment is welcome news for St Helens, bringing skills and jobs to the local economy, as well as helping drive forward a sustainable environmental strategy”.

Another, written on behalf of St Helens College, added: “We are very pleased to see such significant investment in the St Helens area, bringing high quality job opportunities and setting up a profitable, modern business”.
