CUB scouts, leaders and volunteers from across St Helens celebrated 100 years of adventure with a carol service in front of the town hall in Victoria Square.

The event took place on Friday, December 16 - exactly 100 years after the cub scouts section was launched.

At 7.15pm the cub scouts joined with thousands of others around the UK in renewing their cub scout promise, pledging to do their best and help other people.

The cubs, who were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of St Helens, Councillors David and Jeanette Banks, sang a number of festive carols after

renewing their promise.

Brian McKee, St Helens Scouts district commissioner, said: "Our Cubs 100 Promise Carol Service in front of the town hall was a brilliant end to a fantastic year celebrating Cubs 100 - the centenary celebration of cub scouts. Here's to the next 100 years.

"Cubs and scouting in general is more popular than ever in St Helens and surrounding areas."

Adult volunteer Julie said: "I've had some great times volunteering as a scout leader and I can't recommend it highly enough. I volunteered to help develop young people but I stayed because it's great fun!"

Chief Scout and celebrity adventurer, Bear Grylls, said: "I am super proud to see so many young people renewing their cub scout promise to do their best and help other people. I am excited to see scout numbers continue to rise across the UK and the big reasons for this are the adventures made possible by the amazing volunteers from St Helens."

Cub scouts are aged eight to ten, with meetings consisting of games and activities, and with plenty of time spent outdoors.
