THE boss of Whiston Hospital has paid tribute to hairdresser Herbert Howe who died after a battle with cancer aged 72.

The legendary hairdresser and fundraiser from Liverpool was a regular visitor to Whiston Hospital, bringing joy to many of its elderly patients.

Herbert, who was known as the 'King of Bling' had also been the St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust's ambassador of dignity in care since 2010.

Trust chief executive Ann Marr said: “We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend Herbert Howe.

"Herbert became our 'Ambassador of Dignity in Care' in 2010, a role he performed with great enthusiasm and passion.

"He gave a generous amount of time to our hospitals, with many hours spent chatting to patients and visitors. Without exception, he attended Whiston Hospital every year at Christmas.

"Last Christmas Eve he was visiting our patients until late into the evening bringing gifts and his own special sparkle and laughter to our mainly elderly patients.

"He gave so much to our patients and staff and we cannot thank him and his family enough for the support they have shown us over the years.

"He will be greatly missed by everyone here at Whiston and St Helens Hospitals, we will always remember him with great affection for the great joy he brought to us all.”
