THE British Home Stores shop in St Helens will close its doors after a final day of trading this Saturday (July 23).

A spokeswoman for administrators Duff & Phelps confirmed the branch, in Church Square, would be included in the first tranche of closures.

The closure will affect 16 jobs, with staff being redeployed to other stores during their wind-down period, where possible.

The spokeswoman said: "The 16 people have not yet been listed for redundancy as the administrators may be able to transfer some of them into roles at other retail outlets."

All 163 BHS shops are to be closed, resulting in the loss of up to 11,000 jobs in total, after administrators failed to find a buyer for the retailer.

The store in Church Square shopping centre is one of the largest retail units in the town centre.

The BHS branch in Warrington is also among the first 20 stores across the country to close on Saturday, but no closure date has been announced for the Widnes store.

St Helens' council leader Councillor Barrie Grunewald described the loss as "a bitter blow" to the town.
