A GROUP of superhero walkers took to the streets to complete a 15-mile trek in aid of the Melissa Adams Smile fund.

A team of around 10 walkers took on the route starting in Eccleston and taking in the town centre and Rainford along the way.

Twelve-year-old Melissa, who has the rare Angelman Syndrome, went round the whole route, managing to walk some of it and completing the rest in her wheelchair.

The event was organised in aid of the Smile fund to help raise money for a sensory room to help Melissa manage her condition.

Melissa lives with numerous disabilities including poor mobility skills and being epileptic.

"It took us six hours to do and we had lots of hospitality along the way and free drinks," said mum Kathryn.

"Melissa did walk some of the way, it was fabulous and she sat in her wheelchair for the rest and was waving to everybody and people were waving back.

"It was a really good day and I would like to thank the ladies at Toast and the Hudson Smokehouse and also Andy Reid who was there when we got to Rainford with his beer bus and they gave us a free deal and Melissa had an ice cream.

"It was good having a laugh and there was a community feel to the whole day."

Kathryn added: "I was alright doing the 15 miles though it was hard pushing the wheelchair. It was all the youngsters who were lagging behind!

"The day raised £850. The sensory room will cost around £20,000 in total and it's a long way to go but if we keep doing events like this it will soon mount up."
